Join us on the St. Francis path
"To be simple is to see things in the eyes of God."
St. Francis of Assisi
Welcome
Congratulations, Chicago Cubs, on winning your first World Series in 108 years. When I heard Joe Maddon sum up how "community" equaled "success" for the Cubs, his thoughts reminded me of the St. Francis community. I've changed just two words of his rally remarks below ...

"I've been around education [baseball] for a bit.
Never have I experienced anything like St. Francis [Chicago] on a daily basis.
It's different. It's spectacular. It's comfortable. It's warm.
And it's the way it should be." -Joe Maddon

St. Francis is the third high school of my career, and never have I experienced anything like the rigorous college prep academics coupled with community support so impressive it inspires students to succeed. Our Entrance Exam is Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 8:00 a.m. I invite you to test at St. Francis High School and join our impressive community, where minds and spirits thrive and students achieve success. Visit www.sfhscollegeprep.org/entranceexam by January 9, 2017 to register for the Entrance Exam. Be part of our St. Francis community, and experience the way high school should be.

There still are more opportunities to visit:
1) Please join us for our final Open House on Wednesday, November 16 beginning promptly at 6:00 p.m. You're invited to experience academic department presentations and a Curricular and Co-Curricular Information Fair.  Come see everything St. Francis High School has to offer!
2) We also welcome your son or daughter to visit St. Francis for a Shadow Day. Please visit www.sfhscollegeprep.org/shadow to register.
3) Parents of prospective students, see St. Francis when school is in session. Visit our Tuesday Tours for coffee and a school tour with the Director of Admissions on Tuesdays from 9:00-10:00 a.m.

"I Am St. Francis"
Diane Mercadante, Director of Pastoral Ministry

This month, St. Francis celebrates a "Spirit of Giving" campaign promoting acts of kindness and service. The effort is one part of our faith-connected service program with a Franciscan goal. "The goal is to have a relationship with Christ," explains Diane Mercadante, Director of Pastoral Ministry. Students serve in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, who "embraced the poor and brought love and acceptance to the world," Mercadante continues. Although students begin with charitable acts, the goal is to move them toward encounters of service. For example, freshmen experience a fall trip to Feed My Starving Children, then build toward deeper acts of personal service, such as tutoring our neighbors at Marian Park and feeding others at Catholic Charities food trucks.

"Charity is good, however, we encounter people while doing service, and that is where the transformation happens," explains Mercadante. "The Gospel calls us to be on the margins and go to people."  This culture is genuine and also permeates each student's experience at St. Francis. "I am grateful to the legacy of service in the building," Mercadante shares. "There is a culture of taking care of one another. It's something we do-nurture and care for students.  It's in the bones of the building and the community."

International and Domestic Trip Opportunities

"Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all," said Aristotle. For St. Francis students, minds and spirits thrive in the classrooms of France, Spain, and Walt Disney World as new people and places expand experiences in language, art, theater, band, and choir.

Educational trips to France and Spain rotate every year. Students may experience a cooking class in Paris, walking art classes along the Seine River, flamenco dance instruction in Spain, as well as traditional tours and visits. "The trips are highly engaging for the student and a confidence builder," explains Elizabeth Brand, World Languages Department Chair and trip moderator. Students prepare over 18 months beforehand by attending classes to build community among the group and understand expectations, budgeting, culture, and other detailed information.

Trips to Walt Disney World occur every even year for art, theater, band, and choir students at St. Francis High School. During President's Day weekend of 2016, about 130 students traveled to Disney for the experience. The St. Francis Band marched down Main Street U.S.A. in Magic Kingdom's "Disney Festival of Fantasy" parade. The Choir and Music Ensemble performed at Disney Springs Waterside Stage. "The opportunity is once in a lifetime in which the kids have memories that will last them forever," relays Bob Mamminga, Co-Director of Activities in Performing & Visual Arts. In addition to performing at the park, students participated in three workshops with Disney professionals. "The benefits are the camaraderie and the celebration of the arts from people at the top of their field," Mamminga concludes.
